Let’s take a look at some of the flops and hits of the four-time National Film Award winner Dhanush.

Dhanush made his acting debut in 2002 with the Tamil film Thulluvadho Ilamai. According to IMDB, the film, made on a budget of Rs 4 crore, managed to earn only Rs 3.5 crore at the box office. It can be said that the movie had an average performance and is counted neither as one of Dhanush’s hit movies nor as one of Dhanush’s flop movies.

Next, he had two releases in 2003 with Kaadhal Kondein and Thiruda Thirudi. According to IMDb, Kaadhal Kondein made on a budget of Rs 4 crore, managed to earn Rs 7 crore at the box office, and Thiruda Thirudi, made on a budget of Rs 6 crore, managed to earn Rs 11 crore at the box office. These two films can be added to Dhanush’s hit movies list and can be said to have set the first milestone in Dhanush’s acting career.

In 2004, Dhanush acted in three Tamil films: Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan, Sullan, and Dreams. According to IMDb, Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan, made on a budget of Rs 6 crores, earned Rs 7 crores at the box office, so this film can also be considered an average film. But, we can treat the other two films as Dhanush’s flop movies, as according to IMDb, Sullan, made on a budget of Rs 6 crore, managed to earn only Rs 3 crore at the box office, and Dreams, made on a budget of Rs 7 crore, garnered only Rs 4 crore at the box office.

In 2005, he acted in two more Tamil films, Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam, and Devathaiyai Kanden. Made on a budget of Rs 13 crore, Devathaiyai Kanden earned Rs 17 crore, while Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam, made on a budget of Rs 8 crore, managed to earn Rs 5 crore at the box office. That is, while the first film had better-than-average results, the second film can be counted among Dhanush’s flop movies.

In 2006, he appeared in two more Tamil films, Thiruvilaiyaadal Aarambam and Pudhupettai. The two films, made on a budget of Rs 10 crore, managed to earn Rs 16 crore and Rs 21 crore, respectively, at the box office. Both films are on Dhanush’s hit movie list.

The year 2007 saw the release of two more Tamil films, Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram and Polladhavan. According to IMDb, Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram, made on a budget of Rs 9 crore, managed to earn only Rs 6 crore at the box office, and Polladhavan, made on a budget of Rs 10 crore, managed to earn Rs 17 crore at the box office. That is, while the first film was listed in Dhanush’s flop movies and the second film was listed in Dhanush’s hit movies.

In 2008, he worked in two Tamil films, including Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Kuselan (guest appearance). According to IMDb, Yaaradi Nee Mohini earned Rs 21 crore at the box office and is included in Dhanush’s hit movies list.

In 2009, he appeared in another Tamil film titled Padikkadavan. According to IMDB, Padikkadavan, made on a budget of Rs 10 crore, earned Rs 15 crore at the box office, and the film is on the list of Dhanush’s hit movies.

In 2010, he acted in two Tamil films, Kutty and Uthamaputhiran. Kutty, made on a budget of Rs 17 crore, managed to earn only Rs 18 crore at the box office, and Uthamaputhiran, made on a budget of Rs 13 crore, managed to earn only Rs 16 crore at the box office. This means the two films were average at the box office.

According to IMDb, Aadukalam, made on a budget of Rs 18 crore, proved to be a box office success of Rs 30 crore and won the National Award for the film. This was listed as one of Dhanush’s hit movies. On the other hand, Mappillai, which was made on a budget of Rs 33 crore, earned only Rs 32 crore at the box office and proved to be one of Dhanush’s flop movies. Also, while Venghai, made on a budget of Rs 24 crores, managed to prove to be an average film at the box office, earning Rs 28 crores, his Mayakkam Enna, made on a budget of Rs 23 crores, proved itself to be a success by earning only Rs 36 crores at the box office. Mayakkam Enna is one of Dhanush’s hit movies.

In 2012, he released a Tamil film, 3. According to IMDb, 3 made on a budget of Rs 29 crore earned Rs 45 crore at the box office, and the film proved to be a super hit at the box office. Her song “Why This Kolaveri Di” in the film made history as the first music video to reach 100 million views on YouTube. Also, it is the most searched song in India. That year, Dhanush acted in a total of 5 films, including Proprietors: Kammath & Kammath (Malayalam film, guest appearance), Ethir Neechal (guest appearance), Raanjhanaa (Hindi film), Maryan, and Naiyaandi. According to IMDb, Raanjhanaa made on a budget of Rs 25 crore and grossed only Rs 104 crore at the box office. Besides being a box office hit, one of Dhanush’s hit movies Raanjhanaa proved to be the highest-grossing film of Dhanush’s career till 2013. In the same year, Maryan, made on a budget of Rs 26 crore, managed to earn only Rs 28 crore at the box office, and Naiyaandi, made on a budget of Rs 20 crore, managed to earn only Rs 16 crore at the box office.
